TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has announced new import tariffs of 10 percent for all countries. The announcement follows a decision by the Supreme Court of the country, stating that the use of the law as the basis for the previous reciprocal tariff implementation exceeded the president's authority.
Based on the official release from the White House, the new tariffs on goods entering the U.S. will take effect on February 24, 2026, local time, and will be in place for 150 days. However, the release stated that import tariffs would remain Trump's primary means of protecting American businesses and workers.
"The Supreme Court’s disappointing decision today will not deter the President’s effort to reshape the long-distorted global trading system that has undermined the economic and national security of our country, and contributed to fundamental international payment problems," as quoted from the White House fact sheet released on February 20, 2026.
The release also states that since the first day of Trump's presidency, the Republican president has challenged trade rules deemed imbalanced and detrimental to the U.S. The reciprocal tariff policy has prompted major U.S. trading partners, representing over half of the global GDP, to reach historic agreements on trade and investment that will open new markets for the country's exports.
The White House also explained the continuation of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART), a reciprocal trade agreement that has been signed. Specifically, the United States will continue to respect the legally binding ART.
America also expects the same commitment from its trading partners. "While the domestic legal authorities to impose future tariffs will change, the overall direction of travel for the United States—reshoring domestic production and expanding market access abroad through a combination of tariffs and deals—will not."
Previously, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the reciprocal tariff policy using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) had exceeded the president's authority. A few hours after the ruling was issued, President Donald Trump announced a 10 percent tariff for all countries.
