TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Trade Policy Agency at the Ministry of Trade, Rusmin Amin, stated that the ministry has not yet received instructions to follow up on allegations that counterfeit and illegal goods are being sold at Mangga Dua Market, as reported by the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
"That is just an issue raised externally. We have not received any directive from above," said Rusmin, who also serves as Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order at the Trade Ministry, when met in the Cikini area, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, April 24.
When asked about possible policies to address the circulation of counterfeit and illegal products in the market, Rusmin suggested the matter be referred to the Directorate General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order (PKTN) at the ministry. "Please ask the PKTN team," he said.
In its 2025 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers published on March 31, 2025, the USTR listed various tariff and non-tariff barriers faced by the United States in trade with partner countries, including Indonesia. This report serves as a basis for U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose additional import tariffs.
One issue highlighted by the U.S. government is the circulation of illegal goods in Indonesia. The USTR criticized the Indonesian government for providing inadequate protection of intellectual property rights, citing widespread piracy and copyright violations. The report specifically named Mangga Dua Market in Jakarta, which was included in the 2024 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy.
An Indonesian delegation led by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has discussed the import tariff issues with the U.S. government. Both countries have agreed to resolve the reciprocal tariff policy matter within 60 days.
