
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Speaker of the US House of Representatives Mike Johnson said on Monday that he is postponing his trip to Israel, where he was scheduled to speak at the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, on June 22.
"Due to the complicated situation happening in Iran and Israel, Speaker (Knesset) (Amir) Ohana and I have made the decision to postpone the special session of the Knesset," Johnson said in a statement as quoted by Anadolu.
"We hope to reschedule the speech in the near future and send our prayers to the people of Israel and the Middle East," he added.
The US State Department on the previous Monday updated its travel advice for Israel, the occupied West Bank, and Gaza. The US State Department warned Americans not to travel to these areas due to increased security risks.
Tensions have escalated since Friday, when Israel suddenly launched coordinated airstrikes and drone attacks on several locations in Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch a retaliatory attack.
Israeli authorities said on Monday at least 24 people have been killed and hundreds others injured in Iran's missile strikes since then. Meanwhile, Iran said that at least 224 people have been killed and over 1,000 others injured in Israel's attack.
