TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Israeli strike on the headquarters of Iran’s state-run broadcaster, Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), in Tehran has killed three people. The news was announced by the broadcaster on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, several hours after the attack took place on Monday night.
"Three of the TV station’s employees were killed and others were wounded in the Israeli attack," the IRIB channel stated, without specifying how many were hospitalized, as reported by Al Arabiya.
Israeli warplanes reportedly struck the state television building shortly after the military called on residents in the district where the IRIB headquarters is located to evacuate.
A live broadcast on the IRIB channel was briefly disrupted following an explosion, which caused the studio lights to go out.
The Israeli military said the strike was aimed at the “communication center of the Iranian regime.” In response, Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the bombing of the media facility as a war crime.
On Monday evening, an Israeli military spokesperson speaking in Persian called on residents of Tehran’s District 3 to evacuate, saying the area was home to military targets and that civilians were in danger.
Hours later, the attack on the IRIB building was shown live on the network’s news channel, IRINN.
Following a series of explosions, anchor Sahar Emami told viewers, "This sound you heard, it is the sound of aggression against the homeland, the sound of aggression against truth and righteousness."
A louder blast soon shook the studio, prompting Emami to evacuate.
The channel’s programming was briefly interrupted and replaced by a news bulletin, before normal broadcasting resumed minutes later.
IRIB chief Peyman Jebelli later appeared on screen holding up a bloodstained piece of paper, declaring that the station and its staff "will stand until the end."
Fars, a semi-official Iranian news agency, reported that Masoumeh Azimi, an IRIB secretary, was among those killed in the attack.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqai denounced the bombing, calling it an “evil act” and a “war crime.”
According to Iran’s health ministry, at least 224 people have been killed and over 1,200 injured in Israeli airstrikes since Friday, when Israel launched a major aerial campaign against Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure.
Meanwhile, Iran’s missile attacks have killed at least 24 people and wounded 592 others in Israel, according to the Israeli Prime Minister’s office.
