TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Indonesia has received a formal request from the Aceh Provincial Government seeking assistance for post-disaster recovery efforts in Sumatra.
UNICEF said it is currently reviewing the scope of support requested and coordinating with relevant authorities to determine priority areas.
“This process aims to identify urgent needs where UNICEF can complement the government-led disaster response,” UNICEF Indonesia said in a statement to Tempo on Monday, December 15, 2025.
Together with other United Nations agencies, UNICEF has been working closely with the central and local governments to respond to the disaster affecting several parts of Sumatra, including North Sumatra and West Sumatra.
The UNICEF team from the Aceh Field Office has been present at affected locations since the early stages of the disaster and has been reinforced by specialists focusing on child welfare and protection.
UNICEF reaffirmed its readiness to provide further support through close coordination with government institutions and partner organizations, emphasizing its commitment to strengthening the ongoing response.
The Aceh Provincial Government has also sent a similar request to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), seeking its involvement in the post-disaster recovery process.
UNICEF is a UN agency specializing in child welfare, while UNDP focuses on national development initiatives, including poverty reduction and inequality alleviation.
Aceh Government spokesperson Muhammad MTA confirmed that the administration had proactively reached out to international organizations currently operating in Indonesia. “Yes, we have written to both UNDP and UNICEF to participate in post-disaster recovery efforts,” he said on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
According to Muhammad, both agencies have long-standing partnerships with the Indonesian government, including in Aceh. He noted that UNICEF still has active programs in the province through early 2026, making its involvement particularly relevant to the recovery phase.
The Aceh Government hopes that support from international organizations will strengthen recovery efforts, especially in sectors aligned with each agency’s mandate.
“Given the current disaster situation, we have taken the initiative to invite international organizations that remain active in Indonesia to continue their engagement in Aceh,” he said.
