TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Indonesia received a letter from the government of Aceh requesting assistance with ecological recovery from the floods and landslides in Sumatra at the end of November. The Head of UNDP Indonesia Representation, Sara Ferrer Olivella, has confirmed the letter.
Sara stated that UNDP received the official letter from the Government of Aceh on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Currently, Sara mentioned that the UNDP is assessing the most effective way to support the disaster response team and affected communities.
"This is in line with our mandate in early recovery," said Sara when contacted via email on Monday, December 15, 2025.
The government of Aceh has approached two United Nations agencies to assist with post-disaster recovery efforts in Sumatra. In addition to UNDP, Aceh has sent a letter to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
UNDP is an agency that focuses on national development, including poverty eradication and inequality reduction. Meanwhile, UNICEF focuses on child welfare.
Aceh Government spokesperson Muhammad MTA stated that the regional government reached out to international agencies currently operating in Indonesia. "Yes, that's correct, we have written to UNDP and UNICEF to participate in the post-disaster recovery," said Muhammad MTA when confirmed on Sunday, December 14, 2025.
According to Muhammad, UNDP and UNICEF are official UN agencies that have long been collaborating with the Indonesian government, including in Aceh. He mentioned that UNICEF is known to still have ongoing programs in Aceh until early 2026, thus deemed relevant to be involved in the recovery process after the disaster.
The Aceh Government hopes that the involvement of these international agencies can strengthen the recovery efforts, especially in their respective focus areas. "Therefore, international agencies that are still operating in Indonesia, we took the initiative as the regional government for them to continue to be in Aceh, especially in response to the current disaster," he said.
