UN Reaches Out to Gaza's Disabled Community After Ceasefire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, welcomes the continuation of ceasefire implementation in Gaza, based on the proposal from U.S. President Donald J. Trump, including the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

In a release received by Tempo on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Dujarric stated, "UN agencies are reaching communities in areas that were cut off for months, delivering life-saving assistance."

The UN reports that humanitarian workers and their partners can now move more easily "in various areas in Gaza" - a development welcomed after continuous blockade by Israeli authorities.

It is reported that 190,000 tons of aid are being sent to Gaza by the UN. They are currently delivering food, shelter materials, medicines, and other supplies.

These efforts represent a vital first step towards stabilizing the situation and restoring basic human dignity. However, the need is still great, and sustained access and funding are crucial.

The Secretary-General calls on all parties to strengthen this ceasefire and turn it into a lasting peace.

Appreciation to the Involved Parties

Dujarric also expressed appreciation to the governments of Qatar, Egypt, the United States, and Turkey for their consistent mediation efforts.

He also acknowledged that the ceasefire process could not succeed without the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which played a vital role in ensuring the safe and humane release of prisoners from both Israel and Palestine.

"He (UN Secretary-General) appeals to regional and international actors to seize this moment of respite to restart a credible political process that can deliver the outcome of two independent, sovereign, democratic States, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security within their secure and recognized borders on the basis of pre-1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states – in line with international law, UN resolutions and other relevant agreements," Dujarric added.

Ceasefire in Gaza

After a two-year wait, a ceasefire has been achieved in Gaza. As reported by Al Jazeera, world leaders gathered in Egypt on Monday to sign the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

The ceasefire result has been met with relief and concern about the future of Gaza, where in the past two years, a total of 67,869 Palestinians have died as a result of Israeli genocide, and around 10,000 others are still buried under Gaza's ruins.

"We’re seeing these global leaders gathering together, ensuring that they’re all aligned, that they want to end this conflict," said Zeidon Alkinani, a lecturer at Georgetown University in Qatar, to Al Jazeera.

"But how sustainable is the long-term future after this peace treaty? Are we ending all the issues that ended up accumulating to leading to the events of October 7 and everything that happened [after]? I think that’s the question we need to look at," expressed Alkinani, considering the relatively new peace process at the ceasefire stage.

So far, progress towards a more permanent resolution still seems distant.

Israel still insists that it will not allow a Palestinian state. Trump continues to support Israel and only makes confusing comments about the future of Gaza.
