TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto is making adjustments to the development plan of the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in Penajam Paser Utara Regency, East Kalimantan, with a focus on environmental and disaster preparedness.

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi said one of the revisions aims to ensure the new capital can better anticipate forest fires.

“Design corrections also include functional considerations, such as adding more reservoirs,” Prasetyo said during a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Prasetyo explained that the changes reflect Prabowo’s concern for the climate and environmental conditions in IKN, noting the region’s heat and forested areas that increase the risk of fires.

“The President wants the IKN Authority to consider potential disasters in the city’s design,” he said, adding that sensors and other climate-monitoring tools are being installed for ongoing assessment.

Prabowo first reviewed and adjusted the IKN plan during his inaugural site visit on Monday, January 12, 2026, where he received a progress report from Basuki Hadimuljono, Head of the IKN Authority.

The new capital is expected to serve as Indonesia’s political center by 2028, as stipulated in Presidential Regulation No. 79 of 2025, which updates the Government Work Plan for 2025.

During his visit, Prabowo provided guidance on improving the design and accelerating construction, continuing the megaproject initiated under former President Joko Widodo. He arrived at the IKN State Palace Helipad at 05:47 WITA, marking his first visit as president.

Basuki said Prabowo’s visit reaffirms the government’s commitment to fast-tracking IKN as a national strategic project.

“I accompanied the President on his working visit to Nusantara Capital as an affirmation of the government’s commitment to safeguard the continuity of Nusantara as a National Strategic Project,” Basuki wrote on Instagram @basukihadimuljono on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
