TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Officials in the state of Idaho, United States, have identified the man believed to have started a wildfire on Sunday and then shot at the responding firefighters, killing two.
The shooting suspect, who apparently shot himself, was identified as 20-year-old Wess Roley on Monday, June 30, by Kootenai County Sheriff Robert Norris, as reported by CNA.
A third firefighter was also injured in the incident that occurred on Canfield Mountain, outside the city of Coeur d'Alene in the northwest state.
The sheriff said Roley was from California and had lived in various places on the West Coast.
"We have information that he, at one time wanted to be a firefighter, so we don't know if there's a nexus to that desire and what happened yesterday," Norris said in a press conference.
According to CBS News, authorities have yet to find any writings that would indicate the shooter's motive.
The victims in the incident were identified as 42-year-old Frank Harwood and 52-year-old John Morrison, both veterans of the Kootenai County Fire Department.
The injured firefighter was identified as 47-year-old Dave Tysdal, who underwent two surgeries in the past 24 hours, according to Coeur d'Alene Fire Chief Tom Greif.
The sheriff on Sunday said the fire was deliberately set, calling it an "ambush."
About 300 law enforcement officers were dispatched to the area when the chaotic event unfolded.
Serious gun violence is common across the United States, where many states have limited barriers to purchasing firearms, despite widespread support for greater gun control.
There have been 189 mass shootings in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive—defined as four or more people shot.
