TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) group has claimed to have killed and injured a number of Israeli soldiers in an ambush in southern Gaza's Khan Younis.
In an official statement by their military wing, the Al Quds Brigades, on Monday, June 30, the group said the attack took place on Saturday, June 28, by detonating a house that had been rigged with explosives.
As reported by Anadolu, the house exploded as it was passed by an Israeli infantry patrol, causing casualties among the soldiers. The Al Quds Brigades mentioned that the house had been designed as a trap with anti-personnel and anti-tank explosive materials.
"We ambushed a Zionist infantry force by detonating a house they had taken shelter in east of Khan Younis—which had been previously rigged with anti-personnel and anti-fortification explosives," their statement read, as quoted from the Yemeni News Agency (SABA).
The Al Quds forces also stated that they engaged in a clashes with Israeli military reinforcements that arrived at the scene.
"As soon as rescue forces rushed to the scene, we engaged them with machine guns and RPG shells, prompting heavy helicopter fire and smoke cover to evacuate their surviving soldiers," the statement revealed.
A retaliatory attack from the Israeli side occurred shortly thereafter. The Al Quds Brigades mentioned that the Israeli military used helicopters and smoke screens to evacuate surviving soldiers. As of the time of writing, the Israeli military has not issued an official response to the claim.
Palestinian resistance groups have continued to launch attacks on Israel since the beginning of the massive operation known as the Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7, 2023.
According to Al Jazeera, more than 56,500 Palestinians have been killed in the Israeli onslaught in the Gaza Strip since Israel launched its genocidal war in the enclave.
International calls for a ceasefire continue to emerge, but air and ground attacks persist. Gaza's humanitarian crisis has worsened, with severely limited access to food, clean water, and medical services.
In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. They are suspected of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
