TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has offered Nepal aid following severe flash floods in Rasuwa district. He said on Friday that Washington had contacted Nepalese leaders and was ready to send help. Trump depicted the flood disaster as “terrible,” as water and mud swept the buildings away.
“It’s a mixture that nobody’s ever seen anything quite like that, where very powerful, strong, you know, strong, well-built buildings were wiped out like they were toothpicks,” Trump said, as quoted by The Times of India.
“It’s a terrible thing. No, we are sending aid, and we’ve spoken to the leadership, and we let them know anything they want, we’ll have,” he added.
Trump’s remarks came after the U.S. Department of State noted that 90 Americans are reportedly missing as the floods struck the border regions of Nepal and China on Wednesday. Out of them, the department said three were rescued, while fatalities remain unknown.
“We’re currently tracking 90 Americans who may be impacted by the flood, currently unaccounted for," a State Department spokesperson said, citing Firstpost. The department also sent a disaster response adviser to the region along with $500,000 in aid on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported that the death toll from a flash flood in Rasuwa district has reached 389, while 977 remain missing.
The country’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has formed an Emergency Response Team to conduct search and rescue operations, verify information, and provide consular assistance to foreign nationals affected by the floods.
