TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has called for the establishment of a National Athlete Academy or training center to prepare Indonesian competitors for the 2028 Olympics. The academy aims to train athletes across several sports branches.
State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi confirmed the request, stating it was directed to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir.
"It is hoped that the formation of the academy would lead to achieving medals," Prasetyo said at the Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
Prabowo conveyed his desire during a limited meeting with several ministers at the Air Force Base, held after the President returned from witnessing the signing of the Gaza peace agreement in Egypt.
Prasetyo did not specify which sports would be selected for the academy, nor did he provide a timeline for its establishment.
During the meeting, Prabowo received reports from several ministers, including Erick Thohir. Prasetyo stated that Erick apologized to the President because the Indonesian National Football Team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Prabowo reportedly felt burdened by the defeat but encouraged the nation to strive again, citing two major upcoming events: the 2027 Asia Cup and the 2028 Olympics.
"But as the Head of State and Government, he also expressed the message to let us strive again. We face two major events, the 2027 Asia Cup and the 2028 Olympics," Prasetyo conveyed.
Prabowo also received an investment realization report from the Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, which included the realization of Patriot Bonds. Additionally, Rosan reported on the waste-to-energy project, which is slated for construction in 34 locations and cities that generate over 1,000 tons of daily waste.
Prasetyo noted that the project is currently implemented in 10 locations, including Bantar Gebang, Bekasi, and that Danantara would seek an optimal waste management scheme for the 34 regencies and cities.
The President received a report on the preparation for developing human resources (HR) based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) from the Minister of Research and Technology (Mendikti saintek) Brian Yuliarto. Prabowo assigned Brian to prepare HR development in anticipation of downstreaming efforts and to oversee several government programs in the plantation and marine sectors that require skilled HR.
"Thus, the President specifically instructed the Minister of Research and Technology to prepare these human resources," Prasetyo concluded.
The meeting was also attended by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
