TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some people experience fear of flying, or aerophobia. Several factors could contribute to this condition, including previous bad flight experiences, hearing unpleasant stories during flights, or being worried about tight spaces.
For those who experience anxiety when flying, an experienced pilot shared practical advice, including the best times to fly. Captain Chris and his wife, Laurie, shared tips on their YouTube channel, Travel Tips by Laurie. The channel regularly provides baggage tips, airport security advice, holiday clothing ideas, flight secrets, and more.
In their latest video, Captain Chris from the United States answered various questions from their followers about flying, one of which was how to overcome nervousness during flights.
According to the captain, for people with aerophobia, the best time to fly is in the early morning. During this time, the air is generally cooler and less turbulent, especially in the summer. This reduces the possibility of turbulence during takeoff and throughout the flight.
Seats for People with Fear of Flying
In addition to the best times to fly, he also recommends booking seats near the front or above the wing, as these seats experience less turbulence compared to the back of the plane. This is because these areas are the most stable points inside the plane.
"I realize with a lot of airlines it costs extra to sit up there now, but closer to the airplane you'll feel less of the 'yaw' (side-to-side movement caused by the tail of the plane) that an airplane has," he said, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Another tip he suggests is for passengers to inquire about the possibility of speaking with the pilot, then inform the pilot about their aerophobia. "A lot of pilots will tell you the forecast and what the rides are going to be like—so don't be shy!" he said.
Flying at an altitude of 30,000 feet in the sky can be terrifying for some people. However, according to the National Safety Council, airplanes are the safest mode of transportation.
