TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For travelers who must adhere to a gluten-free diet, it can be quite a challenge when traveling abroad. Especially when it comes to finding restaurants that accommodate this dietary need.
Travel experts at Iglu Cruise have released the top five gluten-free friendly destinations in Europe. The team researched each capital city in Europe and used TripAdvisor data to determine the percentage of restaurants offering gluten-free options.
Top 5 Gluten-free Friendly Destinations in Europe
As reported by Express UK, here are the five destinations with the highest percentage of gluten-free restaurants:
1. Valletta
As the best gluten-free city in Europe, Malta's capital boasts 27.6 percent of restaurants offering gluten-free menus. The historical culinary scene in this Mediterranean city, located at the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, combines Sicilian and North African flavors. One of the restaurants that offers a completely gluten-free menu is elu Manna.
Aside from its culinary offerings, there are several tourist destinations in Valletta worth visiting. Such as St. John's Co-Cathedral, a Baroque architectural masterpiece built in 1573. Travelers can also take a boat tour to the islands of Gozo and Comino from the Valletta Harbor while enjoying the sunset.
2. Reykjavik
Reykjavik takes second place with 19.2 percent of gluten-friendly restaurants. Traditional dishes like plokkfiskur (mashed fish stew) made from cod or haddock with potatoes are naturally gluten-free. Some restaurants are also willing to adjust their menus for travelers avoiding gluten.
Iceland's capital city is a popular winter vacation destination. One of the attractions includes the mineral-rich geothermal spa at Blue Lagoon, or hunting for the mesmerizing northern lights between August and March.
3. Dublin
Next is Dublin, with 18.1 percent of restaurants catering to gluten-free visitors. Classic Irish dishes like stew and potatoes are generally gluten-free. The capital of Ireland is also known as a cultural hub, with various famous attractions such as Guinness Storehouse, Trinity College, and Dublin Castle. Don't miss the National Museum of Ireland for archaeological artifacts, or the National Gallery for Irish and European art.
4. London
13.8 percent of restaurants in London offer gluten-free options. One of them is Los Mochis in Notting Hill, a Japanese-Mexican fusion restaurant with a 4.2 rating on Google, and a 100 percent gluten-free menu. In addition, Borough Market and Camden Market offer a variety of gluten-free food options for travelers.
5. Oslo
Lastly, Oslo has 13.7 percent of restaurants providing gluten-free menus. One of them, Olivia, offers a gluten-free menu. Many restaurants prepare traditional Norwegian dishes, like Kjttkaker, using gluten-free ingredients. Food Hall Mathallen is also a must-visit as it offers a variety of gluten-free dishes from around the world.
