Prabowo Tells State-Owned Enterprise Chiefs to Resign if They Fail to Perform

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has invited senior executives of state-owned enterprises to step down if they are unable to fulfill their responsibilities, saying there are others ready to take their place.

Prabowo delivered the warning during the inauguration of Pertamina’s oil refinery project in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, on Monday, January 12, 2026.

“If they are not capable of serving with the compensation provided, then they should resign. Ask to step down immediately,” Prabowo said, as broadcast live on the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.

The president initially took aim at what he described as shameless behavior among some executives at state-owned companies.

He said there were officials who continued to demand performance bonuses despite their companies posting losses.

“These companies are already losing money, yet they still ask for bonuses. That is shameless and stubborn, in my view,” Prabowo said.

“I will say it plainly, some state-owned enterprise directors are not performing well.”

Prabowo said he had instructed the Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Management Agency Danantara, Rosan Perkasa Roeslani, along with several responsible ministers, to carry out a comprehensive cleanup of all state-owned enterprises.

“I have assigned the head of Danantara and several ministers to clean up all state-owned enterprises. There are many of them, and many are incurring losses,” he said.

He also alleged that individuals occupying strategic positions within state-owned company management had misled their superiors and even deceived the president for personal gain.

“This must stop,” Prabowo said.

The president emphasized the importance of protecting national wealth, which he said is essential to strengthening the country’s future.

“We need it to eradicate poverty, eliminate hunger, advance industry, pursue technology, and prepare for the years ahead,” he said.

Prabowo also warned that global competition is becoming increasingly intense and cautioned that if Indonesia does not remain strong, other countries could seize its wealth.
