TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tropical Cyclone Seed 96S will bring moderate to heavy rainfall in West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara, while blowing strong winds to the southern coast of Bali and East Nusa Tenggara.
The same tropical cyclone seed is predicted to generate moderate high waves (1.25 - 2.50 meters) in the waters south of Central Java to East Java, the Indian Ocean south of Central Java to Yogyakarta, the southern waters of Lombok to Timor Island, and the Savu Sea.
It is highly likely that 2.50 - 4.00 meter high waves will occur in the southern part of the Bali Strait and the Indian Ocean south of East Java to East Nusa Tenggara.
The information is derived from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG) daily weather forecast released on Friday.
Tropical Cyclone Seed 96S began to form in the Indian Ocean, south of West Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday, December 25, 2025, at 01:00 a.m. local time. As of Friday morning, the maximum wind speed tops 15 knots (28 km/h) with a minimum air pressure of 1003 hPa.
Based on BMKG's prediction, this system will slow but further intensify on Saturday morning, with wind speed topping 20 knots in the southwestern part of the system.
This system is forecast to move eastward on Friday-Saturday, heading towards areas with strong vertical wind shear hindering its growth. It will then turn westward on Saturday-Sunday.
Meanwhile, Erma Yulihastin, a researcher at the Center for Climate and Atmospheric Research of the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN), revealed that the effects of 96S will begin to manifest on Friday night. According to the climatology research professor, heavy rainfall is limited to Nusa Tenggara, but extends to Yogyakarta and Surakarta as well. She stated, "And will likely spread to the east."
Previously, on Friday morning, Erma explained that the 96S cyclone seed formed from a cyclonic vortex that grew from the Sawu Sea, which then expanded and strengthened. She mentioned that the effects of strong winds and high waves will occur on the southern coast of Bali-Lombok and NTB. Erma urged caution for residents and tourists on these beaches.
