TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Italian military police, Carabinieri, have issued arrest warrants for 97 individuals as part of a national operation targeting Ndrangheta, a notoriously brutal mafia group in Italy.
"Some of the most important clans 'Ndrangheta was affected, whose members are accused of committing crimes of the mafia type, assisting and conspiring with mafia, drug trafficking, including international drug trafficking, possession and drug trafficking, extortion, kidnapping for extortion, collusion of mafia-type political elections, and possession and use of weapons," local police stated on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, as quoted by Antara.
The operation was focused on the southern region of Reggio Calabria to dismantle drug trafficking alliances formed by provincial clans to establish a monopoly over the illicit trade. The police deployed helicopters and sniffer dogs to support the operation.
The authorities seized two companies involved in catering and construction businesses, suspected of being fronts for mafia-related illegal activities.
Ndrangheta, originating from the southern Calabria region, is considered one of the most dangerous criminal organizations in the world. The organization monopolizes the European cocaine market and has infiltrated the political elite and public officials in Italy.
