TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Nanggala Task Force of PT Timah Tbk has revealed indications of officials’ involvement in illegal tin mining within the company’s concession area (IUP).

“There are dozens in the field,” said Handy Geniardi, a retired Major General who chairs the Nanggala Task Force, during PT Timah’s consultation meeting with the Regional Representatives Council of Bangka Belitung on Saturday, September 13, 2025.

According to Handy, PT Timah established the Nanggala Task Force to help improve the company’s performance. All findings are reported directly to PT Timah’s President Director, Restu Widiyantoro.

Handy noted that the task force has identified two major challenges: illegal mining practices and growing public rumors about tin prices and delayed payments. “These remain our main focus,” he said.

The task force has also reported several illegal tin collectors to the Attorney General’s Office. “We have documented and submitted the evidence. There are eight collectors in Bangka and four in Belitung. The authority to act is now with the Attorney General’s Office,” Handy explained.

PT Timah President Director Restu Widiyantoro stressed that dismantling the network of illegal collectors is essential.

“These collectors are exploiting the company’s operations that should be benefiting the public. They are the enemy and must be dealt with,” he said.

Restu outlined two strategies to address the issue: “First, we seek to organize collectors who are willing to work legally. Second, we enforce the law against those who refuse. At the same time, we are partnering with as many legitimate players as possible.”

Restu added that PT Timah also receives support from the Halilintar Task Force, a government-formed unit tasked with tackling illegal tin mining. “Some cases have already been brought to court, but the process is not easy because these groups are backed by powers we don’t control,” he said.

When contacted, Bangka Belitung Police Chief Inspector General Hendro Pandowo said he had not received any report regarding officials’ alleged involvement in illegal mining within PT Timah’s concession.

Military officials, including Brigadier General Safta Feryansyah of Korem 045 Garuda Jaya and Lieutenant Colonel Harry Simarmata of the Bangka Military Police Detachment, have yet to respond to Tempo’s requests for confirmation. The Attorney General’s Office has also not issued a comment.
