TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - House Speaker Puan Maharani mentioned more meetings are to come between President Prabowo Subianto and the chair of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), Megawati Soekarnoputri. She stressed that last week’s meeting between the two leaders won’t be the last.
"There will be further meetings and interactions (between Prabowo and Megawati)," said Puan when met at the Parliament Complex in Central Jakarta on Monday, April 14, 2025, but she did not disclose when such meetings will take place.
When Prabowo visited Megawati's residence on Teuku Umar Street, Central Jakarta, on April 7, Puan said they discussed “how to synergize on matters of building the nation.”
During the meeting, Megawati expressed support for the Red and White Cabinet government. "PDIP will synergize to build, assist, and help Prabowo’s presidential duties,” said Puan.
Furthermore, Puan emphasized that the meeting during the Eid al-Fitr season was a long-awaited social call. A rendezvous between the two leaders had been anticipated since October last year, even before Prabowo was inaugurated as president.
The plan was realized six months later, as confirmed by Gerindra Party boss Sufmi Dasco Ahmad. He said Prabowo did not inform former president Joko Widodo about the meeting.
According to Dasco, this meeting emphasizes the good relations between prabowo and Megawati, highlighting their friendship status. The Deputy House Speaker mentioned that Prabowo and Megawati discussed a number of things during the 90-minute conversation.
"The relationship has been good and friendly between Pak Prabowo and Bu Megawati, so the meeting last night was warm,” Dasco said on April 8.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of PDIP, Guntur Romli, said that the meeting discussed personal matters on Prabowo and Megawati’s friendship. Although sudden, Guntur said, the meeting had actually been planned for a long while.
In addition to personal topics, the Prabowo-Megawati meeting also discussed global issues such as the trade war between the United States and China, the conflict between Israel and the Arab countries, the Russia-Ukraine war, tension in the South China Sea, and global warming and its impact on Indonesia. They also spoke about several national strategic issues.
"Finally, President Prabowo and Bu Megawati are committed to communicating and coordinating, especially regarding national and international strategic interests," said Guntur.
