TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafarawi was killed in clashes in Gaza City, a few days after Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Al Jazeera reported that the 28-year-old Saleh was shot and killed by members of an "armed militia" while covering clashes in the Sabra neighborhood of the city. The journalist was known for his videos covering the war.
In footage released by reporters and activists, Aljafarawi's body lay in a flak jacket labeled 'press', on what appeared to be the back of a truck. He had been missing since Sunday morning.
Palestinian sources said clashes were taking place between Hamas security forces and fighters from the Doghmush clan in Sabra on Sunday, October 12, 2025. However, this has not been confirmed by local authorities.
A senior source in the Gaza Ministry of Interior stated that the clashes in Gaza City involved an Israel-affiliated armed militia. The source mentioned that security forces besieged the militia, which reportedly killed people fleeing as they returned from southern Gaza to Gaza City. Despite the recent ceasefire, local authorities have repeatedly warned that the security situation in Gaza remains challenging.
Aljafarawi was cornered by armed individuals and shot seven times. TRT cited a report by New Arab stating that Aljafarawi was targeted and killed by Israeli-backed armed gangs while documenting severe damage in the Sabra neighborhood following the Israeli troop withdrawal.
The Quds News Network also reported that gangs supported by Israel "executed" Palestinian journalist Saleh Aljafrawi in the Sabra neighborhood, Gaza City.
Aljafarawi's death occurred during the early phase of the US-backed ceasefire, which included provisions for the withdrawal of Israeli forces, prisoner exchange, and the opening of border crossings to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Previously, on October 10, photojournalist Arafat al-Khour, working for Abu Dhabi TV, was injured by an Israeli attack while documenting the aftermath of an assault in the same neighborhood in Gaza City. Israel has killed more than 250 journalists since October 2023, a staggering toll among professionals protected under international law.
Today, Monday, October 13, 2025, US President Donald Trump will convene with other world leaders in the Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, to attend the Gaza summit co-chaired with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The summit aims to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security and stability. In this "historic" meeting, a "document ending the war in the Gaza Strip" will be signed, as revealed by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. Neither Israel nor Hamas will have representatives in the negotiations.
