TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that the trilateral Mecca defense agreement signed last week by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan was purely defensive in nature and was not directed against any country.
In a statement posted on social media platform X on Sunday, citing ANTARA, Foreign Minister Dar said that the sole purpose of the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement is to strengthen joint efforts toward peace, stability, and prosperity in the wider region.
The agreement signed by the three countries on Friday, August 7, in the Muslim holy city of Mecca treats an attack on one of the countries as an attack on all three.
Dar said the defense pact remains open to any country in the region willing to uphold its fundamental principles and resolve differences through “mutual respect, cooperation and peaceful means.”
He reiterated that, according to the treaty, an armed attack against any of the three countries would be considered an attack against all of them. This is in accordance with the inherent right of individual and collective self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
The pact, he said, does not cancel or replace existing bilateral or multilateral agreements between those countries, or with other countries or organizations.
Dar said the Mecca Agreement is the result of years of discussions and coordination. It is based on the shared desire to strengthen strategic cooperation in addressing various peace and security challenges, as well as to advance regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
He said the pact was consistent with the fundamental pillars of Pakistan's foreign policy.
Islamabad hopes to continue working with all brotherly countries in the region towards lasting peace and stability, he said.
“We remain committed to advancing the cause of peaceful resolution of all conflicts and building a more secure, stable and prosperous future for our peoples,” Dar said.
