TEMPO.CO, JakartaMyanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing began a two-day official visit to Thailand on Thursday, a trip that Thai officials described as marking a new chapter in bilateral relations following Myanmar's recent election.

The visit also carries broader diplomatic significance, as Myanmar's military-backed government seeks to strengthen engagement with regional partners and improve its international standing after years of diplomatic isolation.

Min Aung Hlaing received a ceremonial welcome from an honor guard at Thailand's Government House before holding bilateral talks with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

According to Thai officials, the discussions centered on cross-border issues, including transnational crime, scam syndicates operating along the Thailand-Myanmar border, drug trafficking, cross-border river pollution, labor cooperation, and economic collaboration.

The two countries also signed several memoranda of understanding, including an agreement on labor cooperation.

During the visit, Min Aung Hlaing is also scheduled to meet members of the Thailand-Myanmar business community.

Visit Signals Broader Diplomatic Outreach

Ahead of the trip, Myanmar released photographs showing former State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi meeting representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), a move widely interpreted as a signal that the country's leadership is seeking to gradually re-engage with the international community.

Myanmar has been excluded from high-level ASEAN summits since the military seized power in 2021, after the bloc concluded there had been insufficient progress in implementing its Five-Point Consensus to address the country's political crisis. The plan calls for an end to violence and inclusive dialogue among all parties.

The Thailand visit follows Min Aung Hlaing's trip to Laos in July, his first official visit to another ASEAN member state since assuming the presidency after Myanmar's election held between December and January.

He also visited India and China in May and June.

Min Aung Hlaing last traveled to Thailand in April 2025 to attend the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.
