TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) supports the jihad fatwa against Israel issued by the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The MUI Chairperson for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, explained that this fatwa is in line with the Decision of the MUI Fatwa Ulama Ijtima' which emphasizes the obligation of Muslims to defend Palestine.

"Even in this MUI Ijtima' it also recommends sending troops to protect the people of Gaza and Palestine in general from genocide and destruction carried out by Israel," said Sudarnoto in a written statement, Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Sudarnoto emphasized that the MUI also encourages member countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to carry out internal consolidation and take measured steps to stop Israel's actions. According to him, the IUMS jihad fatwa provides a clear picture of the need for a comprehensive and internationally consolidated approach to fight Israel and realize Palestinian independence.

"We must not allow the mass killing and destruction carried out by the greatest terrorist of this century, namely Israel, and supported by America to continue," he stressed.

Sudarnoto assessed that effective international power is needed to fight the alliance that he called "an evil force". He called on Muslim countries to reconsider the presence of American embassies in their countries, considering the strong support of the US for Israel.

The MUI also invited national leaders, clerics, community leaders, and all elements of society to unite in carrying out a comprehensive movement in an effort to pressure Israel and support Palestinian independence.

Fatwa of Muslim Clerics of the World

A number of leading Muslim clerics in the world have issued a fatwa calling on all Muslims and Muslim-majority countries to launch jihad against Israel. This jihad fatwa was issued to defend the people of Gaza who have been attacked by Israel for the past 17 months.

Ali al-Qaradaghi, secretary-general of the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS), an organization formerly led by Yusuf al-Qaradawi, issued a fatwa on jihad to all Muslim countries on Friday, April 4, 2025. "The failure of Arab and Islamic governments to support Gaza when it is being destroyed is considered by Islamic law as a major crime against our oppressed brothers in Gaza," he said, as quoted by Middle East Eye, Tuesday, April 8, 2025.

Qaradaghi is one of the most respected religious authorities in the region. His rulings carry significant weight among the world's 1.7 billion Sunni Muslims. He stressed that Muslims are forbidden from supporting Israel.

“It is forbidden to sell weapons to it, or facilitate their transportation through international ports or waterways such as the Suez Canal, Bab al-Mandab, the Strait of Hormuz, or any other land, sea or air means. The (IUMS) committee issued a fatwa requiring an air, land and sea blockade against the occupying enemy in order to support our brothers in Gaza,” he added.

The statement, which was also endorsed by 14 other prominent Muslim scholars, called on all Muslim countries to review their peace agreements with Israel. Qaradaghi also urged Muslims in the United States to pressure President Donald Trump to fulfill his campaign promise to stop the aggression and establish peace.
