TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Montmartre, the Parisian village, is known for its stunning hilltop views. But the village perched atop a small hill in the 18th arrondissement of Paris has been crowded with tourists, drawn to the beautiful scenery featured in the TV series Emily in Paris and the movie Amélie.
Montmartre's Attractions
Montmartre draws in many tourists because of its historic ambiance with cobblestone streets and panoramic views from Sacré-Cœur. Built in the late 19th century in Romanesque-Byzantine style, this building is an important place of worship in the city. The building has the largest mosaic in France, covering an area of 480 square meters, as reported by Paris J'teaime.
Perched on the hill of Montmartre, this basilica can be accessed by a funicular from Place Saint-Pierre or through grassy courtyards and staircases from the small public garden, 'Square Louise Michel'. Visitors here can see unobstructed views of the city of Paris.
On the north side of the hill, there are parks and vineyards. One of them is the Clos Montmartre vineyard, built in 1930. Additionally, there are two windmills, Moulin Radet and Moulin de la Galette, adding a romantic touch to the district.
Another interesting place is the square, Place du Tertre, where artists now create paintings for tourists. This phenomenon harks back to 19th-century Montmartre, a time when struggling artists in the area created some of the most valuable masterpieces in art history.
Famous painters from Picasso, Modigliani, Manet, and Renoir to Van Gogh once met in cafes and were busy in many artists' studios in Butte. Art lovers can visit Muse Montmartre to explore former artist studios and the gardens surrounding the hill, including Dali Paris on 11 rue Poulbot, for surrealism enthusiasts.
Tourist Crowds
Like many other places in Europe, the large number of tourists is causing concern for local residents. Anne Renaudie, head of a protest group called Vivre Montmartre, or Montmartre Living, said the local population is only 26,000 people, while the number of tourists visiting the place is as many as 11 million every year.
"We’ll be left with places selling crêpes and tacos to tourists and nothing for locals," she told The Times, as quoted from Express.
Other Hidden Gems
If Montmartre offers panoramic views of Paris and traces of the history of artists, another area that also offers a culinary experience is Belleville. Like Montmartre, the northeast area of Paris was formerly a village, but maintains a strong and vibrant energy shaped by diverse immigrant communities.
This fusion has given rise to one of the most eclectic dining experiences in Paris, where traditional French bistros sit alongside bustling Asian restaurants, while vibrant street art adorns every corner.
The area has much to offer for those interested in multiculturalism and social movements, yet it remains less noticed by mainstream tourism.
For those seeking tranquility, Parc des Buttes-Chaumont offers some of the best panoramic views in Paris, where the city skyline stretches beneath the shining sunset.
