TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The situation in Los Angeles is growing increasingly intense, as Trump deployed on Sunday, June 8, the California National Guard to quell the riots that broke out following large-scale protests against the government's immigration crackdown. Trump issued orders for the law enforcement to arrest masked protesters after banning the use of masks during protests.
He thanked the National Guard, a military standby force usually controlled by the state governor, for a "job well done" in Los Angeles.
"ARREST PEOPLE IN FACE MASKS, NOW!" said the U.S. President in a post on his Social Truth platform.
Earlier, Trump stated that the use of masks would not be allowed during the protests. It is unclear whether the federal government has the authority to make such a decision. Demonstrators wear masks to avoid facial identification by security forces and to protect themselves from the smoke emitted by firecrackers and police ammunition.
Trump also deployed thousands of California National Guard troops to the streets of Los Angeles on Sunday to help quell the third-day protests against the government's immigration crackdown.
Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom said deploying the National Guard is unlawful.
National Guard troops were stationed around federal government buildings. Meanwhile, demonstrators set fire to cars and clashed with security forces in Los Angeles, America's second-largest city, over federal immigration raids.
Protests began after a federal raid in a city with a large Latino community on Friday. The Los Angeles Police declared that some of the protests were "unlawful assemblies." The police accused protesters of throwing concrete, bottles, and other objects at the police.
Several self-driving cars from Alphabet's Waymo were set on fire on the downtown streets on Sunday night, according to video recordings.
"Arrests are being initiated," the police department wrote in a social media post. The Los Angeles Police deployed officers on horseback to try to control the crowd.
Meanwhile, California Governor Newsom criticized Trump's threat to deploy Marines to the Los Angeles rallies, blaming it for the "escalating situation."
"Los Angeles: Remain peaceful. Don't fall into the trap that extremists are hoping for," he said, as quoted from NDTV.
