TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Donald Trump's travel ban on citizens from 12 countries has officially taken effect on Monday, June 9, 2025, amidst the growing political tensions over the U.S.'s tough immigration crackdown.
As reported by Al Jazeera, the policy announced last week was deemed by Trump as a necessary move to prevent the entry of "terrorists."
Trump's decision was enforced amidst chaos in the streets of Los Angeles as protesters clashed with the police and National Guard forces following a wave of arrests by immigration authorities.
This divisive order resurrects similar actions launched during Trump's first term, when travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries were barred from entering the U.S. Many countries affected by the new order are plagued by war and large-scale displacement.
According to the Associated Press, there were no immediate disruptions seen at Los Angeles International Airport a few hours after the new ban took effect.
This order applies to citizens of Afghanistan, Chad, Eritrea, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Myanmar, the Republic of Congo, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.
Heightened restrictions are also imposed on individuals from Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela.
Trump stated that the countries facing full travel ban have been proven to harbor a "large-scale presence of terrorists," fail to cooperate in visa security, and are unable to verify travelers' identities.
According to Trump, these countries also have inadequate criminal history records and high rates of visa overstay in the U.S.
Based on guidelines issued last Friday, the new ban does not revoke previously issued visas for individuals from the listed countries. However, it is still unclear how this rule will be implemented at the entry ports.
During Trump's first term, similar travel bans resulted in confusion and disrupted travel. In his announcement of the new restrictions last week, Trump mentioned that the action was prompted by a recent "terrorist attack" against Jewish people in the state of Colorado, U.S.
The group had been staging a protest in solidarity with captives in Gaza when they were attacked by an Egyptian man who, according to the White House, had overstayed his visa.
Trump referred to the attack as underscoring the "extreme dangers posed to our country by the entry of foreign nationals who are not properly vetted." He warned that new countries can be added to the ban list as "threats emerge around the world."
Egypt is not among the countries affected by the ban or increased surveillance.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, warned that the "broad and sweeping nature of the new travel ban raises concerns from the perspective of international law."
