TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Home Affairs, Muhammad Tito Karnavian, mentioned that, as of now, one area still has a dysfunctional local government due to the impact of the floods and landslides in Sumatra at the end of November. This area is the Aceh Tamiang Regency in Aceh.

"Currently, the only area where the local government is not functioning is the Aceh Tamiang Regency," said Tito at Skadron 45 Halim Perdana Kusuma Airfield, Jakarta, on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

Tito explained that the local government is still hindered in serving the public because the office of Aceh Tamiang Regent is still covered in mud almost three meters high. Furthermore, regional government officials can only use the secretary's room, located on the second floor of the Regent's office.

Additionally, Tito stated that the service office complex and the office area are still filled with flood sediment. As a result, the government office in Aceh Tamiang has not been able to operate. "No one is entering the office, the government is not functioning," said the former Chief of the Indonesian National Police.

According to Tito, the government has made efforts to clean up the mud deposits in the office building by deploying the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police, and the regional government officials from the National Institute of Public Administration. He assessed that their work had produced significant results within two weeks.

The Ministry of Home Affairs noted that 52 regencies and cities were affected by the disasters in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh. They are distributed across 18 areas in Aceh, 18 areas in North Sumatra, and 16 regions in West Sumatra.

Currently, the government is focusing on the recovery of only a few areas that are considered to have suffered the most severe damage and require more assistance. Tito mentioned that for North Sumatra, these areas include Central Tapanuli, South Tapanuli, North Tapanuli, Sibolga City, and Humbang Hasundutan Regency.

Furthermore, in Aceh, the areas that the government is focusing on are Aceh Tamiang, East Aceh, North Aceh, Pidie Jaya, Gayo Lues, Central Aceh, Takengon, and Bener Meriah. "Seven, without denying the others," Tito said.

As for the areas in West Sumatra that the government is focusing on, there are four: Agam Regency, Tanah Datar, Pariaman, and Pesisir Selatan.

Fifty days since the disaster, according to Tito, the government has been working to address the impacts of the floods and landslides. However, he admitted that the efforts of the Indonesian National Armed Forces and National Police are still insufficient to accelerate the reconstruction in the field. Therefore, students and civil servants from the National Institute of Public Administration, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, and the School of Statistics have also been deployed.

Tito plans that the Task Force for the Acceleration of Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sumatra will hold a coordination meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs office tomorrow, Thursday, January 15, 2025. This will be followed by a press conference. "A press release about the situation update and what will be done," he said.
