TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Elementary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti has officially designated July 7 as Indonesian Librarian's Day. This designation is outlined in the Elementary and Secondary Education Minister's Decree No. 81 of 2025, signed in Jakarta on June 25, 2025, and effective immediately.
"Designating the date of July 7 as Indonesian Librarian's Day. Indonesian Librarian's Day, as referred to in clause one, is not a national holiday," states the decree, issued on Friday, July 4, 2025.
Why a Librarian's Day?
Several considerations underpinned the decision to establish Indonesian Librarian's Day are as follows:
- Libraries serve as vital centers for lifelong learning and community creativity. Their professional management is crucial for enhancing community quality.
- Librarians play a strategic role in improving community quality by facilitating knowledge acquisition and literary comprehension through library resources.
- The designation aims to increase public awareness regarding the significant role of libraries and librarians in fostering national abilities, character development, and civilization.
As cited from Decree 81/2025, "Based on the considerations as referred to, in order to appreciate the important role of librarians in library management, it is necessary to establish the Minister of Education and Culture's Decree regarding the Designation of Indonesian Librarian's Day."
