TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” stormed into theaters with a powerful debut, raking in an impressive $218 million globally over its opening weekend. The film outshined even the legendary “Superman” at the box office, making a bold statement in the superhero arena.
With $57 million earned domestically on its first day alone, this Marvel reboot is now on track to claim the title of the year’s second-biggest opening, trailing only behind the blockbuster hit, “A Minecraft Movie.”
Toward its first week of screening, the movie drew almost half of its substantial gain from regions like the USA and Canada at $118 million. According to Deadline, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” made a thunderous impact overseas, dominating major box offices in the UK, France, Italy, and Mexico. Its explosive international reception has firmly secured its spot as one of 2025’s most standout superhero releases to date.
Making its overseas debut 13% ahead of “Thunderbolts,” 11% of “Superman,” and 4% above “Captain America: Brave New World,” this movie is a notable Marvel Cinematic Universe entry since “Deadpool & Wolverine” nearly a year before.
While the debut number was jaw-dropping, Variety suggested, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” still has a long way to go to turn viewers into a profit. In comparison, “Captain America: Brave New World” and “Thunderbolts” didn’t manage to gain their shares theatrically despite launching with staggering first-week grosses.
According to LA Times, the movie received an 88% approval rating on mainstream review platform Rotten Tomatoes and an “A-” from polling firm CinemaScore. Starring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bacrach and Joseph Quinn, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” took a production cost of $200 million.
Defying the industry's doubts, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” recorded a history to become the sixth-best opening for a Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise post covid. Its early triumph is attributed to the marketing ventures by Disney’s loud campaign these past few weeks.
With Mexico topping the first-week box office for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” the Asia-Pacific region also showed strong box office promise. Indonesia led the pack with a staggering 89% audience approval, followed by the Philippines at 76% and Hong Kong at 53%—signaling the film’s rising momentum across global markets.
Nearing the end of its first week, other countries like Brazil, Australia, Korea, and Germany are also seeing significant rates. In Australia, the superhero franchise successfully earned 60% market share as the biggest Marvel opening day of the year. Compared to Korea with a quieter reaction, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” launched as the No. 1 star of the day.
Eventually, this movie still has to catch up with fellow sought-after cinema stars this summer, including Warner Bros’ “Superman,” which has crossed the half-billion milestone and is now at $502.7 worldwide. On the other hand, Universal/Amblin’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” is pacing multiple strides ahead, accumulating a global haul of $700 million.
In all, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” has set a thrilling tone for Marvel’s 2025 slate, blending strong international momentum with a confident domestic showing. As the film continues its theatrical run, all eyes will be on whether it can sustain the hype and join the ranks of Marvel’s most profitable ventures in the post-pandemic era.
