Kazakhstan President Tokayev Invites Prabowo to Visit Astana

3 days ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev formally invited his Indonesian counterpart, Prabowo Subianto, for a state visit to the country. The invitation was received by the Indonesian Embassy in Astana, according to a press release received by Tempo on Monday, July 28, 2025.

Kazakhstan views Indonesia as a key partner in Southeast Asia, and this visit is expected to bolster the cooperation between both parties. "Hopefully, the state visit by the President of Indonesia to Kazakhstan will serve as a historic event and a strategic momentum to expand cooperation between the two countries in various sectors," read the statement by the Indonesian Embassy in Astana.

A Brief History of Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Kazakhstan date back to Kazakhstan's independence, when Indonesia recognized the country on December 28, 1991. Official relations were established on June 2, 1993. Before the official opening of an Indonesian embassy in Astana on December 29, 2010, Indonesia's diplomatic affairs were handled by the Indonesian Embassy in Moscow (1993-2006) and the Indonesian Embassy in Tashkent (2007-2010).

The two countries have had close relations through a number of high-level visits. Indonesia's former President Soeharto visited Almaty on April 6-8, 1995, followed by a visit from then-Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev to Jakarta on June 22-26, 1995, and April 12-14, 2012.

Ex-President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also visited Astana on September 1-3, 2013. This relationship has been further strengthened by a visit from Vice President Jusuf Kalla to Astana on September 8, 2017. A return visit was made by the former chair of the Senate of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, on March 13, 2018, to Jakarta.

Subsequently, a bilateral meeting between former President Joko Widodo and President Tokayev in Dubai in December 2023, followed by a meeting between the Foreign Minister of Indonesia, Sugiono, and the Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, Murat Nurtleu, in Jeddah on March 8, 2025.

Significance of the Visit for Indonesia

Indonesian Ambassador to Kazakhstan and Tajikistan, Dr. M. Fadjroel Rachman, emphasized the importance of the state visit invitation. "This state visit is highly strategic to strengthen cooperation as well as the strategic and comprehensive partnership between Indonesia and Kazakhstan, which is the largest and wealthiest country in Central Asia," said Fadjroel.

He added that the visit aligns with Prabowo's idea that the era of one-country dominance is over. "The world is now moving towards a new multipolar, equal, and mutually respectful order, and wants to make Indonesia a strategic partner," he said.
