TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) of Indonesia is not worried about the impact of the United States (US)' import tariff policy on the Indonesian halal industry. Deputy Head of Literacy, Advocacy, and Cooperation Agency at KADIN, Isnaeni Iskandar, mentioned that Indonesia can actually use this momentum to strengthen the domestic halal industry market.
"Indonesia is targeted as a market by the US. So we need to focus on how we can compete domestically," said Isnaeni during an online discussion titled 'The Effects of Trump-Nomics and the Fate of the Halal Industry' organized by the Center for Sharia Economics and Business at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
Isnaeni even mentioned that the domestic market itself is quite large. Isnaeni cited that shipping goods between islands still incur high costs. However, if logistical issues can be addressed, the price difference between goods in Java and other islands can be reduced. In addition, she said that halal certification costs should also be reduced to avoid burdening entrepreneurs.
In addition to the domestic market, Isnaeni believes that the ASEAN market can become an opportunity for the Indonesian halal industry. "That is quite good for me to strengthen our market in neighboring countries, or to be added with Japan and Korea. So their halal commodities can also develop there," she said.
On the other hand, the Young Expert Industry Builder at the Ministry of Industry's Halal Industry Center, Detri Fitria, is concerned that Trump's tariffs will cause a decrease in the export of halal commodities to the US. According to Detri, if there is a decrease in exports, the impact will be a decline in competitiveness and the risk of layoffs. "Ultimately, if demand has decreased, then production will be adjusted by the industry. The ultimate effect is layoffs," said Detri.
Detri mentioned that 25 percent of the national economic growth of 5.03 percent in 2024 was supported by the halal value chain sector. In this sector, there are halal agricultural products, halal food and beverage, Muslim fashion, and Muslim-friendly tourism.
