TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Cathedral Church is set to conduct a Requiem Mass to pray for the soul of Pope Francis. The Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia, the direct representative of the Holy See, will lead this mass.
"I will also participate in the concelebration mass. The Secretary Father has sent a letter to all parishes in the Archdiocese of Jakarta to celebrate the Eucharist for the soul of Pope Francis," said Archbishop of Jakarta Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo when met at the cathedral on Tuesday, April 23, 2025, as quoted by Antara.
The Requiem Mass at the Jakarta Cathedral Church is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 18:00 Western Indonesian Time (WIB). The mass will also be attended by the Chair of the Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI), along with several other bishops.
Cardinal Suharyo also appealed to the 69 parishes under the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Jakarta to organize their own Requiem Masses on Thursday afternoon. However, if this is not feasible, each parish has the flexibility to schedule the mass on an alternative day.
Regarding nationwide observances, Cardinal Suharyo explained that each diocese throughout Indonesia has been granted the discretion to arrange prayer services and mass schedules in accordance with the specific circumstances of their respective regions. "What is important is that the congregation is invited to pray for the Holy Father," he emphasized.
Cardinal Suharyo also announced that, based on the outcome of the Cardinal Council meeting in the Vatican which took place on Tuesday morning Rome time, Pope Francis's body will be moved from Casa Santa Marta, his residence, to St. Peter's Basilica in a solemn procession on Wednesday morning, April 23, 2025, local time. The Head of the Vatican Household will lead this procession.
Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 at his residence on Monday, April 21, 2025, at 07:35 Vatican time. According to information from Vatican doctors, Pope Francis died of a stroke that resulted in a coma and subsequently led to heart failure.
The funeral is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. Vatican time and will be presided over by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the Dean of the College of Cardinals. The mourning period will continue for several days thereafter.
