TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Retailers prefer to expand their stores over depositing cash in banks, said the chair of the Indonesian Retailers and Mall Lessee Association (Hippindo), Budihardjo Iduansjah.
"We don't keep money in our banks. As soon as we have the funds, retailers will most definitely open a store," he said at Kota Kasablanka Mall in Jakarta, on Thursday, December 18, 2025.
Budihardjo said the strategy is intended to support the cash flow and create job opportunities for retail workers. Retail expansion also affects the income of shopping centers that lease their spaces.
The statement came as Budihardjo gave a speech at the inauguration of the Indonesia Great Sale 2025 shopping festival. The shopping festival, participated by 380 retailers from 412 shopping centers across Indonesia, will take place from December 18, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
With a transaction target of Rp30 trillion, Indonesia Great Sale 2025 offers discounts of up to 80 percent and an additional 11 percent tax refund for foreign shoppers.
Budihardjo hoped that the 18-day shopping festival would support the growth of retail sales for both local and international brands. Hopefully, he went on, the discounts could attract more Indonesians to shop locally rather than overseas.
Many Indonesians opt to shop abroad due to lower retail prices and broader options. Budijarjo also urged the government to evaluate the consumer shopping habits to cater to their interests and push them to shop locally. "Hopefully, this could increase foreign exchange reserves to prevent cash outflow overseas," he said.
