TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Tourism Industry Association of Indonesia (GIPI) plans to send a letter to President Prabowo Subianto regarding the revision of the Tourism Law. According to the Chair of GIPI, Hariyadi Sukamdani, the association is disappointed with the removal of the article that regulates GIPI in the new Tourism Law that was recently ratified by the House of Representatives (DPR).
"GIPI will soon send a letter to the president, with a copy to the Minister of State Secretariat, so that this issue becomes a concern, because the removal of GIPI was not discussed with us at all, it was completely disregarded," said Hariyadi during a press conference at the Nusantara International Convention Exhibition, Pantai Indah Kapuk area, on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
The article regarding GIPI was previously regulated in Chapter XI of Tourism Law Number 10 of 2009. In Chapter XI Article 50, it is stated that to support the development of a competitive tourism industry, a forum called the Tourism Industry Association of Indonesia or GIPI was established. It also regulated the functions and activities carried out by GIPI. However, in the new law, Chapter XI was removed.
Hariyadi believes that the removal of this article sends a message that the DPR wants to diminish the role of the industry. "We have fought hard to promote tourism, but the core of the tourism industry is being eradicated in the new law," he said at a press conference at the Nusantara International Convention Exhibition, Pantai Indah Kapuk area, on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
Hariyadi also stated that the removal of the article concerning GIPI never came up in discussions between the industry and the DPR. He mentioned two issues that were discussed between GIPI and the DPR. First, regarding funding issues, GIPI proposed the establishment of a Public Service Agency (BLU) to collect fees from foreign tourists. Second, GIPI supported the formation of the Tourism Board proposed by Commission VII.
The revision of the Tourism Law has been ratified and passed as a law in a plenary session on Thursday, October 2, 2025. "Commission VII of the Indonesian DPR, in discussing this bill in committee meetings, prioritized meeting the aspirations of the public, experts, as well as tourism associations and the tourism industry," said the Chair of Commission VII of the DPR, Saleh Partaonan Daulay, at the Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on October 2, 2025, monitored from the live broadcast on YouTube TV Parliament.
Tempo has contacted the Chair of Commission VII of the DPR, Saleh Daulay, for comments. However, as of the writing of this news, he has not responded to Tempo's message.
