TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Indonesian Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, who served from 2016 to 2025, has been appointed as a member of the Governing Board at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization established by tech mogul Bill Gates.

Sri Mulyani will join six other board members, including the foundation’s CEO Mark Suzman and Bill Gates.

Suzman praised her appointment, highlighting her extensive experience as a key strength for the foundation.

“Sri Mulyani brings deep experience in shaping equitable economic outcomes, expertise that is essential to achieving the foundation’s long-term goals,” Suzman said in an official statement on January 12, 2026.

“Her leadership will help ensure that our resources continue to be used to expand opportunity, promote inclusive economic growth, and improve outcomes for communities around the world.”

Sri Mulyani holds the distinction of being Indonesia’s first and longest-serving female Finance Minister. She also served as Managing Director of the World Bank from 2010 to 2016, where she played a key role in shaping global economic policies.

Her appointment comes as the Gates Foundation undergoes a major transformation, following Bill Gates’ decision last year to distribute the foundation’s entire endowment over the next two decades.

The foundation’s primary focuses include preventing maternal and infant deaths, eradicating infectious diseases, and alleviating poverty worldwide.

Through the Gates Foundation’s official website, Sri Mulyani expressed her pride in contributing during this critical period.

With 20 years to make as much impact as possible for those who need it most, I am honored to join the Gates Foundation board to contribute at this pivotal moment filled with both challenges and opportunities,” she said.

She also highlighted her nearly decade-long collaboration with the foundation, particularly in leveraging technology for inclusive development.

Sri Mulyani will work closely with fellow board members Ashish Dhawan, Dr. Helene Gayle, Strive Masiyiwa, Thomas J. Tierney, Mark Suzman, and Bill Gates.
