TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the duration of dry season in most parts of Indonesia will be shorter than usual this year. The shorter dry season is expected even though currently, until the second semester of 2025, global climate phenomena such as the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) from the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) from the Indian Ocean are in a neutral phase.

Factors affecting this, according to the Head of BMKG Dwikorita Karnawati, are the sea surface temperatures in Indonesian waters which are warmer than normal. She predicts that the anomaly will persist until September, which "can affect local weather in Indonesia."

As quoted from a statement on Saturday, April 12, 2025, Dwikorita advised the agricultural sector to adjust the planting schedule according to the early prediction of the dry season in each region. In the forestry sector, she urged increased vigilance against forest and land fires, especially in areas predicted to experience a drier than normal dry season.

Dwikorita explained that 60 percent of Indonesia is predicted to experience a normal dry season, 26 percent will experience a wetter than normal dry season, and 14 percent will be drier. "About 26 percent of the areas will experience a wetter dry season, especially in parts of Sumatra and Kalimantan," she said.

Dwikorita also stated that the peak of the dry season will occur from June to August 2025. However, the beginning will not be simultaneous and is currently still in the transition from the rainy season to the dry season since the end of March.

In April, Dwikorita said that only 115 out of a total of 699 Seasonal Zones in Indonesia will enter the dry season. This number will increase in May and June, including most parts of Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, and Papua.

"Subsequently, the regions that will experience the peak of the dry season from June to August 2025 include the central to eastern parts of Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali, Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku.
