Indonesia's BPOM Asks Nestle to Suspend S-26 Baby Formula Imports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has requested PT Nestle Indonesia to temporarily halt distributing and importing S-26 Promil Gold pHPro 1 baby formula with batch numbers 51530017C2 and 51540017A1.

BPOM head Taruna Ikrar explained that the order was based on a food safety warning issued by the European Union Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (EURASFF) and the International Food Safety Authorities Network (INFOSAN).

"The products were recalled due to potential cereulide toxin contamination in certain arachidonic acid (ARA) oil raw materials used in the formula production," he said, adding that the baby formula produced by Nestle Suisse SA at the Konolfigen Plant in Switzerland was also imported to Indonesia.

Taruna mentioned that test results on product samples from the two affected batches showed no detection of cereulide toxin. Nevertheless, BPOM advised consumers who owned the S-26 Promil Gold pHPro 1 products to stop using them or return them.

"BPOM continues to prioritize the precautionary principle and prioritizes protecting public health, considering the vulnerability of users of these formula products (infants),"  he said.

According to Taruna, the cereulide toxin reportedly detected in the S-26 formula is produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The toxin is heat-stable, meaning it cannot be destroyed through boiling or regular cooking processes. Exposure can cause symptoms within 30 minutes to six hours, including severe vomiting, diarrhea, and unusual drowsiness.

BPOM urged the public to remain calm, as authorities keep surveilling pre- and post-market distribution, working closely with other food and drug supervisory agencies to ensure the safety, quality, and nutrition standards of circulating food products.

"Consumers can still consume S-26 Promil Gold pHPro 1 baby formula with batch numbers other than 51530017C2 and 51540017A1," Taruna stated.

Meanwhile, in a written statement, Nestle Indonesia declared that all products manufactured in Indonesia are safe for consumption and meet national and international food safety standards. “This has also been confirmed through comprehensive testing,” the company said on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

However, Nestle Indonesia voluntarily suspended the distribution and imports of the affected batches under BPOM's supervision despite negative test results for cereulide toxin.

Nestle Indonesia also urged consumers who have the Wyeth S-26 Promil Gold pHPro batches 51530017C2 and 51540017A1 to contact consumer services at 0800 182 1028 or via email at [email protected].
