TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - India's Parliamentary Committee on Communications and Information Technology has given Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg three days to issue a personal apology for temporarily blocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's posts on Facebook.
India Today reported on Wednesday, citing ANTARA, that a committee led by Nishikant Dubey called the blocking of the prime minister's post on July 23 an attack on democracy aimed at the leader of a nation of about 1.4 billion people.
Last July, Meta restricted access to a video uploaded by Modi that was intended for Indian students and addressed the leak of national exam questions.
The company later restored the post, citing a technical error, and issued an official apology. However, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology deemed the explanation “not satisfactory.”
Citing sources familiar with the matter, India Today reported that the committee warned Meta that if it failed to apologize within three days, the government could revoke the platform's Safe Harbor immunity over user-generated content. The move could potentially pave the way for criminal liability against Meta representatives in India.
Earlier on Tuesday, The Economic Times reported that the Indian government had summoned Meta's leadership to discuss the Modi post blocking incident and to seek clarification on the company's steps to eradicate child pornography on its platform.
India was also said to have previously sent a request for clarification to Meta regarding the issue.
