TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Hasto Kristiyanto, the general secretary of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), said he will use artificial intelligence (AI) in drafting his defense statement in court, in what he called the first in Indonesia.
"I, Hasto Kristiyanto, am also studying the philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, and thus, I will use AI to draft my defense statement, making it the first in Indonesia where AI is integrated with facts, legal philosophy, and values imbued in the morality of law," he said in a statement read by PDIP politician Guntur Romli at a corruption trial on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
According to Hasto, the use of AI can strengthen legal logic, elaborate facts, and minimize biased interpretations of legal events.
During his statement, Hasto also underscored the absence of new facts in the ongoing trial. Witnesses brought by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) were also unable to present new evidence against him.
According to Guntur, a linguist presented to the court made an erroneous and biased testimony against Hasto. The expert, he said, misinterpreted the word "bapak" to refer to Hasto Kristiyanto, while 2020 court facts revealed otherwise.
"So, the linguist is heavily influenced by the KPK investigators, by the investigators' illustrations, and is contrary to the facts," continued Guntur, claiming that the interpretation weakens objectivity and contradicts the testimonies already presented in court.
Meanwhile, Hasto Kristiyanto said he entrusts the entire process to the panel of judges to consider the case fairly based on the legal facts and two previous rulings in 2020. The two rulings, as part of the bribery case in the House of Representatives, did not mention Hasto as one of the perpetrators, which he used to base his defense.
Hasto Kristiyanto is a suspect in the bribery case involving former election agency (KPU) Commissioner Wahyu Setiawan in 2020. Prosecutors accused Hasto of providing money to ensure PDIP cadre Harun Masiku becomes House member. He's also accused of giving instruction for Harun Masiku to flee. Masiku remains a fugitive thus far.
