TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Environment Agency observed that air quality in the capital during the 2025 Eid al-Fitr period was cleaner than in the previous year.
According to Asep Kuswanto, Head of the Jakarta Special Region Environment Agency, air quality on the first day of Eid al-Fitr was categorized as good, although a slight increase was recorded on the second day.
"The data also show that the pollutant concentration during Eid al-Fitr in 2025 was lower compared to 2023 and 2024," Asep said in his written statement on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025.
Asep noted that the monitoring took place from March 24 to April 6, 2025, using data from the Air Quality Monitoring Station.
The assessment was based on the Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU), which measures the concentration of Particulate Matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5).
He explained that the PM2.5 levels were highest on March 26 and March 27, coinciding with the final days before the collective leave period. This spike was attributed to increased public activity ahead of the holiday.
The Environment Agency’s data showed that the average PM2.5 concentration on March 26 and March 27 was around 30 micrograms per cubic meter.
On March 28, the level dropped to 10 micrograms per cubic meter. It fell below 10 micrograms per cubic meter on March 29th, before slightly rising again to above 10 micrograms per cubic meter on March 30th.
On March 31, the first day of Eid al-Fitr, PM2.5 was recorded at 9.67 micrograms per cubic meter. The next day, April 1, the concentration increased to slightly above 10 micrograms per cubic meter.
Asep also noted that PM2.5 levels increased again on the fourth and fifth days after Eid as public activities picked up following the end of the exodus. During this period, the concentration was around 30 micrograms per cubic meter.
"This pattern is important for us to monitor every year, so that emission control policies can be more targeted and timely," he said.
In comparison to 2024, PM2.5 levels on the fifth day before Eid were significantly higher, reaching 60 micrograms per cubic meter, which exceeded the air quality standard by a wide margin.
On the fourth day, the level declined to 40 micrograms per cubic meter, and on the third day, it remained above 30 micrograms per cubic meter. On the second and first days before Eid, the concentration was around 30 micrograms per cubic meter. On the first day of Eid, PM2.5 was recorded at 38.52 micrograms per cubic meter, and on the second day, it dropped to 20 micrograms per cubic meter.
Asep Kuswanto welcomed the public to directly monitor the air quality in Jakarta in real time through the website udara.jakarta.go.id. This can also be used for preventive efforts when the air quality deteriorates.
"By knowing the data and information from the features on the website, Jakarta residents can then determine the necessary actions," he said.
