TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Denmark has joined the growing international calls urging Israel to halt its planned massive attacks in Gaza.
Denmark described the situation as "alarming and unsustainable, and called for a UN Security Council meeting to discuss the issue," state broadcaster DR reported as cited by Anadolu on Wednesday, May 14, 2025.
Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that Denmark, along with France, the UK, and other countries, has requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
"We strongly distance ourselves from an Israeli offensive, and Israel must ensure unhindered access for emergency aid," Rasmussen said.
Speaking to DR earlier, the minister condemned the pledge by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to strike Gaza with full force. Rasmussen warned that such actions violate all applicable rules and indicate Israel's failure to meet its international obligations.
Earlier, Danish Ambassador to the UN Christina Markus Lassen expressed similar views to her European counterparts. Lassen emphasized that the people of Palestine in Gaza do not need a new humanitarian mechanism, but an end to the blockade of aid at the border without conditions.
Copenhagen had previously rejected US President Donald Trump's plan to take control of the Gaza Strip as an unrealistic approach to resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict.
"The countries surrounding Israel and Palestine have said very, very clearly that they will not adopt a Palestinian challenge. These are countries that have already taken a big drag if you look at Jordan and Lebanon," he said, referring to Palestinian refugees in those countries.
