TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Patrick Kluivert officially took over as the head coach of the Indonesian national team on January 9, 2025, replacing Shin Tae-yong. Since then, the Dutch coach has led the Garuda in eight official matches, with inconsistent results.
Out of the eight matches, which include four third round qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, two friendly matches, and two fourth round matches, Kluivert has recorded three wins, one draw, and four losses. Indonesia's winning percentage under his leadership is only 37.5 percent.
The three wins came against Bahrain (1-0), China (1-0), and Taiwan (6-0), while the draw occurred against Lebanon (0-0). The four losses came against strong opponents: Australia (1-5), Japan (0-6), Saudi Arabia (2-3), and Iraq (0-1). Overall, Indonesia scored 11 goals and conceded 15.
Tactically, Kluivert has not settled on a fixed formation. In the eight matches, he used a four-defender system four times and a three-defender system four times. Player rotations have been quite high, with a total of 32 players tried during his tenure.
Midfielder Thom Haye is the only player who has appeared in all eight matches. Below him, Jay Idzes and Kevin Diks have both made seven appearances. Five players appeared six times: Joey Pelupessy, Ole Romeny, Ricky Kambuaya, Eliano Reijnders, and Ramadhan Sananta.
In terms of productivity, Ole Romeny is Kluivert's era top scorer with three goals, followed by Kevin Diks with two goals. Five other players contributed one goal each. Meanwhile, six players provided one assist each. These statistics depict the early phase of Kluivert's tenure with Indonesia: still searching for a balance between tactical experiments and on-field results.
Failed to Meet His Own Target
Upon his appointment in January 2025, Patrick Kluivert was given a target by the PSSI to lead Indonesia to qualify for the final round of the 2026 World Cup. The long-term goal was to have Indonesia participate in the 2028 Olympics and the 2030 World Cup. However, he failed to achieve this target after Indonesia lost to Saudi Arabia and Iraq in the fourth round of the Asian zone qualifiers.
Patrick Kluivert expressed his disappointment after Indonesia's loss to Iraq. "First of all, I am very disappointed. Looking at the course of the match, we performed much better, but once again the result did not favor us," said the Dutch coach.
He defended his players by stating that Jay Idzes and his teammates had worked very hard to reach this stage. "I am very proud of the players who showed their hearts and courage on the field. We created chances and played very well, but one moment can change everything. We lost because of one action, and that is very painful," he said.
