TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced that Carlo Ancelotti will be the coach of the Brazilian national team on Monday, May 12, 2025. The CBF announced the appointment even though Real Madrid has not discussed the future of the Italian coach.
Ancelotti has been under pressure since Real Madrid was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. At that time, Los Blancos, Madrid's nickname, lost to Arsenal with an aggregate of 1-5.
Real Madrid was also defeated by Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final and lost in the El Clasico duel on Sunday, May 11, 2025. The defeat almost ended the competition for the Spanish League title.
In a statement on Monday, May 12, 2025, the CBF stated that Ancelotti will leave Madrid after the last match in La Liga this season.
The match against Real Sociedad will be his last. He will take over the coaching position of the Brazilian national team on May 26, 2025. He will be the first foreign coach of Brazil.
As quoted from ESPN, the CBF is very eager to have a new coach to lead Brazil in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers next June. The CBF is also willing to wait for Ancelotti's fate after Real Madrid appoints a new coach. The Italian coach has long been a target for Selecao. Ancelotti has affirmed that he intends to fulfill his contract in Madrid, which will last until June 2026.
Ancelotti is one of the most successful coaches in the history of Real Madrid. In his two terms in charge, he has won three Champions League titles and two La Liga titles.
This season, Madrid has suffered a series of major defeats, including four losses in El Clasico against Barcelona.
The latest was a 4-3 loss at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Company. Madrid also lost in the Spanish Super Cup and the Copa del Rey final.
Real Madrid has not confirmed who will coach the team in the Club World Cup. Los Blancos will start their participation in the tournament against Al Hilal in Miami, Florida, on June 18.
Some sources mention that Madrid is finalizing the contract details for Xabi Alonso. The Spanish coach is the leading candidate for the club to replace Ancelotti. Alonso has confirmed that he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the Bundesliga season.
Alonso played for Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014. He also spent one season under Ancelotti during his first tenure as a coach. Alonso began his coaching career in the academy of Real Madrid.
