TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire to end the border war. Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet met on Monday, July 28, 2025, for ceasefire negotiations at Anwar Ibrahim's official residence in Malaysia's administrative capital, Putrajaya.
As quoted from Al Jazeera, Thailand and Cambodia attended the meeting initiated by Anwar Ibrahim to put a stop to the fighting that has claimed at least 35 lives and caused over 270,000 people to flee. The U.S. and China ambassadors were also present at the meeting, Malaysian officials said.
In an X post on Monday, Hun Manet said the talks aimed to achieve an immediate ceasefire in the conflict with Thailand. However, Phumtham, before leaving Bangkok on Monday, told reporters that he was not certain of Cambodia's good intentions. "They need to demonstrate genuine intent, and we will assess that during the meeting," he said.
Despite the ceasefire talks, clashes continue to occur between the two countries at the border. Thailand is also ramping up its military strength.
On Monday, Thai army spokesperson Colonel Richa Suksuwanon told reporters that battles had broken out along the border. Gunshots were heard at dawn in Samrong in Oddar Meanchey province, Cambodia.
On Sunday, Thailand reported one person killed and another wounded after Cambodia fired a rocket in Sisaket province. The Thai military also reported that Cambodian snipers were camping at one of the contested temples. Thailand accused Cambodia of deploying troops along the border and bombarding Thai territory with rockets.
Cambodian Ministry of National Defense spokesperson Maly Socheata accused Thailand on Monday of deploying a large number of troops and firing heavy weapons into Cambodian territory.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that U.S. officials were in Malaysia to assist this peace effort. Anwar Ibrahim, on the other hand, stated that he will focus on securing a ceasefire between the two countries.
