TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The South Korean Constitutional Court officially impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol from his position on Friday, April 4, 2025. This decision ends months of legal uncertainty and disputes after he declared a military emergency in December, plunging the country into political turmoil.
As reported by CNN, all eight judges of the Constitutional Court unanimously decided to uphold Yoon's impeachment. The decision was met with relief and celebration from his opponents, but with protests from his supporters.
The court's decision on Friday marks Yoon's official removal from the presidency after the parliament voted to impeach him in December. Many members of the parliament were concerned that he might try to impose a military emergency again if reinstated.
In a separate trial, Yoon was arrested in January on charges of leading a rebellion, then released in March after the court revoked his arrest warrant, although not drop the charges.
This issue has deeply divided the nation, with large crowds taking to the streets both supporting and against his impeachment. The police heightened security in the capital before the verdict, setting up barriers and checkpoints, and warning against violence.
This is a remarkable downfall for the former prosecutor turned politician, who became famous for his role in the impeachment and imprisonment of another president years ago, only to now face the same fate.
