TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts that atmospheric dynamics will continue to support increased potential for convective cloud growth and rainfall in parts of West Java from January 19 to 25, 2026. Globally, La Nina conditions are weak, potentially increasing the formation of rain clouds.
"On a regional scale, Equatorial Rossby wave activity is predicted to be active in the Java region and contribute to increased convective activity," said Leni Jantika Haswan, a weather forecaster from the BMKG West Java Climatology Station, in a written statement on Sunday, January 18, 2026.
Relatively warm sea surface temperatures in Indonesian waters also support the supply of water vapor to the West Java region. Furthermore, wind shifts and convergence zones have been observed in the West Java region, which have the potential to trigger and increase rain cloud growth.
"This dynamic support is reinforced by atmospheric lability, which is in the moderate to strong category, further increasing the potential for convective cloud formation on a local scale," Leni said.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) predicts the potential for moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds on a local scale and for short duration. This is likely on Monday, January 19th, in Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, Karawang, Subang, Purwakarta, Suumi, Cianjur, Bandung City, West Bandung, Cimahi City, Sumedang, Majalengka, Kuningan, Cirebon, Tasikmalaya, Garut, Ciamis, Banjar City, and Pangandaran.
On Tuesday, the same weather will affect Bekasi, Bogor, Depok City, Suumi City, Cianjur, Purwakarta, Subang, West Bandung, Sumedang, Cirebon, Majalengka, and Kuningan. On Wednesday, the same weather will affect Bekasi, Bogor, Depok, Karawang, Purwakarta, Subang, Suumi, Cianjur, Greater Bandung, Sumedang, and Garut.
Meanwhile, the potential for moderate to very heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds is expected on Thursday in the cities of Depok, Bogor, Cianjur, and Suumi, as well as Bekasi, Karawang, Purwakarta, Subang, and Indramayu. On Friday, similar weather is likely in Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, Karawang, Purwakarta, Subang, Cianjur, Bandung, Sumedang, Indramayu, Kuningan, and Garut.
On Saturday, similar weather is likely in Bogor, Depok, Bekasi, Karawang, Subang, Purwakarta, Cianjur, Bandung, West Bandung, Sumedang, Cirebon, Indramayu, Majalengka, Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Pangandaran. Meanwhile, on Sunday, similar weather is likely in the East Priangan region, including Kuningan, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, and Pangandaran.
The BMKG urges the public and relevant agencies to remain vigilant against weather conditions that can change at any time and have the potential to cause hydrometeorological disasters, such as heavy to very heavy rain, strong winds, floods, landslides, and fallen trees.
