BMKG Warns of Continued Rainfall in Greater Jakarta Area

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Light rain has been falling consistently across the Indonesia's Jakarta Greater Area (Jabodetabek) on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), rainfall has been steady from Jakarta to Tangerang, Bekasi to Bogor, as well as in Depok and South Tangerang.

This weather continues a pattern observed since last Sunday when Jabodetabek experienced persistent rain, with some areas reporting very heavy and extreme downpours.

The rainfall has caused flooding in several locations and along key roadways, leading to widespread disruptions.

BMKG’s Weekly Weather Prospect for January 13 to 19, 2026, warns that Jakarta remains at risk of moderate-intensity rainfall. The update, released on Monday, January 12, emphasizes that residents should stay alert to potential flooding and water-related disruptions.

According to Andri Ramdhani, Public Meteorology Director at BMKG, the extreme weather is driven by a combination of regional atmospheric dynamics.

He explained that the Asian Monsoon is strengthening and wind speeds in the South China Sea are increasing, flowing southward through the Karimata Strait towards Java.

This cold surge intensifies the convergence zones, which play a key role in triggering the growth of rain clouds, particularly across Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara.

Andri also noted that a low-pressure system south of West Nusa Tenggara is influencing regional wind patterns, enhancing the eastward flow in southern Indonesia.

He explained that these conditions cause air to rise continuously over the region, which increases the chance of heavy rain across Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara.

Erma Yulihastin, a climatology professor at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of the National Research and Innovation Agency, described the current situation as a pre-conditioned vortex located south of West Nusa Tenggara.

This vortex is causing widespread air convergence, which leads to stratiform rain. Stratiform rain is steady and long-lasting, but generally falls at a slower rate, and it is currently affecting the Java Sea and Jabodetabek.

Erma also explained that the situation is further worsened by the convergence of cold and southerly wind surges over Java. She noted that a similar southerly surge in mid-December had redirected Tropical Cyclone 93S eastward, causing heavy rainfall and flooding in Bali.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and take precautions as the region continues to experience unsettled conditions.
