TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale struck the southern areas of Sukabumi and Garut Regencies, West Java, early Tuesday morning, April 15, at 05:44 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).

According to BMKG's shakemap and public accounts, tremors were felt in Cikelet, Pameungpeuk, and Cidora in Garut Regency. Residents in Sindangbarang, Cianjur Regency, and Babadan, Sukabumi Regency, also reported feeling the quake.

The quake registered an intensity of II–III on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale. Vibrations were felt indoors by some, with hanging objects swaying and a sensation resembling a passing truck.

The BMKG reported no structural damage, with the epicenter located at 8.42°S, 107.12°E.

Hartanto, head of BMKG Regional Center II in Tangerang, said the quake originated in the Indian Ocean south of West Java, approximately 158 kilometers southwest of Garut Regency, at a depth of 19 kilometers.

"This shallow earthquake resulted from deformation in the Indo-Australian intraplate zone," he said in a written statement on Tuesday, April 15.

BMKG's monitoring as of 06:07 WIB showed no aftershocks. The agency advised the public to remain calm and to disregard unverified information.
