BMKG: M5.9 Offshore Earthquake Jolts Ternate in North Maluku

1 day ago 4

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that an earthquake struck Ternate in North Maluku on Thursday morning, April 3, 2025. BMKG's analysis indicated that the earthquake had an updated magnitude of M5.9.

The quake’s epicenter was located offshore at coordinates 2.21 N and 126.69 E, 121 kilometers southwest of Doi Island, North Maluku, at a depth of 42 kilometers.

"By considering the location of the epicenter and its hypocenter depth, the temblor is a type of shallow earthquake due to the subduction activities of the Maluku Sea," said the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, in a statement on Thursday.

"The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that the earthquake had a thrust fault mechanism," he added.

The earthquake was felt in Manado, Bitung, Ternate, and Jailolo with a II-III MMI intensity scale, which means that the tremors were felt significantly inside buildings, as if a truck was passing by.

Modeling results show that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami. As of 04:31 AM Western Indonesia Time, BMKG's monitoring results indicated one aftershock activity with a magnitude of 4.9.

BMKG advises residents to remain calm and not be influenced by unverified information.
