TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has placed several areas on alert for heavy to very heavy rain during the period of January 16-22, 2026. These regions include West Java and East Java, which also face warnings for strong winds during this timeframe.
BMKG reported that Indonesian weather has recently shown a significant rise in rainfall intensity. The agency specifically noted Central Java, where daily rainfall reached 188.4 mm, a level classified as extreme (exceeding 150 mm).
Higher rainfall occurred along the northern coast of Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) from Monday morning to Tuesday morning, January 12-13. Data from the Tanjung Priok and Sunter Rawabadak Maritime Meteorology Stations showed 235 mm and 203 mm, respectively. Several monitoring posts in the region also recorded heavy to extreme rainfall.

According to BMKG, this extreme weather results from combined regional factors, including cyclonic circulation and a strengthening Asian monsoon. The circulation, located south of West Nusa Tenggara, has developed into Tropical Cyclone Seed 96S.
These factors created and intensified a convergence zone across southern Indonesia, particularly Java, Bali, and West Nusa Tenggara. "So it plays a crucial role in triggering the growth of intensive rain clouds in those areas," according to BMKG.
In the coming week, BMKG forecasts that global, regional, and local atmospheric dynamics will continue to impact Indonesia's weather. Beyond the Asian monsoon and 96S seed, factors include a weak La Niña, Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity, Equatorial Rossby Waves, and the Nokaen Tropical Cyclone in the Philippine Sea.
